Ideas for Mothers Day

Ideas for Mothers Day

What are you planning on getting your Mum this Mothers day? I’m not sure myself really. It’s such a hard day to get tied down. Part of me knows that it’s not about the gift . . . it’s really about the thought and the old adage – “it’s the thoughts that counts”. But can you imagine your poor Mothers face if you didn’t get her something on the big day – I think I’d be for the high jump you know!

So, anyway I’ve had a few thoughts. Here are the options that I’ve come up with;

First up it’s the old bunch of flowers. But the thing here is deciding what sort of flowers to get and how much to spend. I’d normally go for a mixed bunch for about £45.00 or so, my mum’s a big fan of roses, so they’re something I usually pitch for. Does anyone have any ideas on any other types of flowers?

Second up, I thought about some perfume. There are some great deals available online through sites like kelkoo.co.uk and socialoffers.co.uk so I’m tempted to go down this route. I suppose the main problem here is taking a risk on what you’re mum would like. I know she got Chanel No.5 last Mothers Day from my brother. I wonder if she’d like it again.

I’ve also looked at getting her some vouchers for M&S or somewhere like that. I’m sure she’d like some money to choose something for herself. Anyone know if there are any funky voucher comparison sites out there?

Eleuthera – Nice and Skinny

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Out of the many Caribbean and Bahamian islands my wife and I have visited, Eleuthera is by far the longest and skinniest island we have seen — it is also one of the nicest. At approximately 100 miles long and a several miles wide, Eleuthera offers a rare combination of beauty, charm, ruggedness and tranquility. Within an hour’s time, you can view the deep blue color of the Atlantic from towering coral cliffs, wade in the rich turquoise waters looking for seashells, or go spelunking in a cave filled with multicolored stalactites and stalagmites.

Even better, Eleuthera has miles and miles of pink sand beaches that will simply knock your eyes out. Does this sound like an exaggeration? Trust me, it’s not. These are the same type of pink sand beaches you would find at the fabled, and expensive, Harbour Island which is located just off the northeast tip of Eleuthera. These beaches were also good enough for Club Med at one time — that was until hurricane Floyd in 1999 destroyed the facilities. Club Med chose not to rebuild and packed their bags. The nice thing is the beach is still there and is as gorgeous as ever. Even nicer is the fact there are so few people there making it by far one of the most pristine and tranquil beaches we have seen.

And then there is the charm of Eleuthera. Unlike some of the Bahamian islands we have seen, Eleuthera is not over developed — if anything it is underdeveloped. You get the feeling of time and endurance as you tour the island. One of the more historical places to visit is Preacher’s Cave on the north end of Eleuthera. This cave is where Captain William Sayles and a group of Puritans sought shelter after finding the island. The cave and surrounding area is currently being turned into a historical park. At the entrance of the old cave is a large rock with a plaque that says “William Sayle ship wrecked at Devil’s Backbone found refuge here. Sermons held 100 years.” When standing in the cave, the presence of the adventurers’ spirits is palatable.

With any number of the towns on Eleuthera, such as Governor’s Harbour, you can see the effect the ocean has had on so many of the historical homes and buildings. It kind of reminds you of what it is like to walk down the street of an old Western town; only the motif is stone and sand surrounded by water. Of course, there are some more modern facilities, but not near enough to take away from the overall atmosphere. You definitely won’t find Whoppers being served here.

From the quaint Bahamian towns to the hard packed pink sand beaches, we then visit “The Cliffs” of Eleuthera and we learn a new term: “rogue waves”. Imagine standing on a virtually sheer cliff a hundred plus feet above the ocean and watching the water pound on the rock face below. You feel perfectly safe and removed from the ocean’s display of brute force… that is until a rogue wave hits the cliff wall and jumps up over your head dumping hundreds of gallons of sea water on you and your poor camera. This is immediately followed with a scream “What was that?” Since there are no reefs to break the water coming into the cliffs, the right wave breaking at the right angle produces a water show that even the Bellagio can not match.

When staying on an island like Eleuthera, we prefer renting vacation homes or villas. There is a wide variety of vacation rentals; some considered “luxury” while others are “basic and affordable”. Many of these house and villa rentals can be rented directly from their property owners — a number of which have their own websites on the internet. You may also seek the assistance of a local real estate agent. When looking for that perfect rental home, it is a good idea to ask to see photos, get a detailed description of the rental property, and find out exactly where it is located so you know what is in its proximity. Be sure to ask about their deposit and refund policies.

Eleuthera Island is ideal for any number of typical island activities including fishing for bonefish, surfing, shelling, kayaking, boating, diving, snorkeling and swimming. Did I forget to mention lying in a lounge chair sitting under a beach umbrella and sipping a cold Kalik? Make mine Eleuthera, please.

Top Eight Things To Do In Mallorca

Monday, March 9th, 2009

There are many things one can do when visiting Mallorca, the biggest of the Balearics Islands (Spain). There is not only sun, beach and sangra in the island.

1. Segway visit to Palma’s old town
Cultural sight seen could be somewhat boring sometimes, or maybe one is just too lazy to get a Mallorca guide and walk himself into the old town. Make it funny: get a Segway tour (book at your hotel or call +34 697 574 282) and have a quick 2 hours guided tour into Palma’s old town for just 40 euro.

2. Visit Sller, Dea and Valldemossa
A trip for a day. Rent a car or take the old train to Sller which leaves from the centre and visit the villages on the north coast of the Island, along the Sierra de Tramuntana: Sollér, Dea (well known for being Robert Graves home during many years, and now the place for foreign and local artist looking for inspiration) and Valldemossa, once Frederic Chopin< and George Sand home, where they were retired at the Valldemossa Cartuja while Chopin was recovering from its illness.

3. Sailing along Mallorca’s coast
If you can, rent a boat with a skipper (ht
www.yates-alemanes.de provides a good service). If not, take any of the organized tourist trips along the coast which can be joined for a small amount of money. For the latest, check Cruceros Iberia (+34 971 71 71 90) for a Palma – Sant Elm (and back) morning trip, or Barcos Azules in Puerto de Sller for a north coast sail up to Sa Foradada.

4. Eating tapas
As in other place in Spain, “tapas” (small amounts of food usually shared with other friends while drinking a “chato” -a tiny glass of whatever- of wine or beer) are a must try if visiting Mallorca. There are many places where you can do that, but it’s either recommended to go to La Boveda (Plaza La Lonja, in Palma de Mallorca +34 971 714 863) or just simply enter in to the any bar that looks like frequented by locals.

5. Discovering Mallorca’s unending and unspoilt sandy beaches
Well, not really discovering, as there is nothing which has not already covered by any of the millions Mallorca visitors. But going to Es Trenc in Campos, which is more than 4 kilometres long (and perfect for sky surfing) or to Cala Varques, a small hidden virgin beach next to Cala Millor, only reachable by walking 20 minutes, is something you must do if visiting the Balearics during the hottest seasons.

6. Visiting any of the Street Markets in the villages
Mallorca markets are pretty different from those at the major cities in Europe. Mostly, they sell food, leather goods and some clothes. There you will find a lot of locals and see the mallorcan way of live.

Recommended: either the Sineu one on Wednesdays or the one at the main square in Santa Maria on Sundays. Keep in mind that markets starts early in the morning so be ready to be there by 10:00.

7. Late night drinks and night spots.
In Palma, Pacha Disco and El Garito, both of them near the Can Barbar Darsena in the Paseo Maritimo (the way along the sea front) are a must. In La Lonja, next to the Cathedral, visit the Abaco Bar (a luxurious, impressive and magnificent courtyard bar) or the Atlantico Cocktail Bar, once the place for marines stopping in the island and now meeting point for many expats living in the island.

If you are accommodated in Magaluf, Palma Nova or around and like clubbing, you must visit either the BCM Disco Empire or Bananas. If not, just walk around the streets of Punta Ballena which is full of nice bars and British people.

In Alcudia nightlife is mainly hotel based. However, the people of Lokita organize great parties at the Menta Disco (Avda. Tucn s/n) during all summer. An inside pool, 7 bar desks and Deejay’s like the Groove Armada group for a great night of fun.

8. Having a seaside breakfast
There are many bars, restaurants and hotels by the seaside of Mallorca where you can enjoy a late sunny seaside breakfast after a night out (check www.portixol.com for a hip one). Spanish eat usually late, and breakfast can be taken at any place until 12:00. If you can, try the typical ensaimada (a pastry) with your café con leche (white coffee).

Time Your Trip Around Currency Fluctuations – The Cheap Way to Travel

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Finding a cheap vacation spot abroad can be virtually impossible – everything seems more expensive these days, and vacations are no exception. So how do you find a bargain? One way is to plan your trip to a place that is experiencing currency woes against your home country’s currency.

Currencies fluctuate against each other constantly – it can be a sign of one country’s health just as it could be a sign of economic problems with another. But that needn’t affect your vacation – you don’t care about the interest rates or the employment statistics in Thailand, but investors do. The trick to getting a cheap vacation abroad is to pick a country that has a cheap currency at the time of your trip. This lowers your costs in a number of ways – your money will be worth more when you get there. Hotels will be cheaper, and you’ll be able to pay for all the fun things you do on vacation for cheaper. There are plenty of places on the Internet you can watch currency prices at, and your travel agent will probably tell you if you ask. The trick to being able to plan this sort of vacation is to be flexible until about a month out – currencies (usually) don’t swing that dramatically in that period of time, so pick a few potential places you’d like to go and choose relatively close to your planned departure date. This will let you get a trip someplace fun and still have money in your pocket to spend doing what you want on your vacation.

Safe Travel Tips On Mean Streets

Monday, March 9th, 2009

The best way to avoid any possible dangers during your travels is to keep your head about you at all times. Here are some travel tips to help keep any inconveniences at bay.

1) When it comes to belongings, your passport and your money are the most valuable possessions you have while traveling. Always know where they are wherever you are.

2) Always have a photocopy of your passport secure in a bag different from that which your passport is in. Should you lose your passport, you will at least have something to show.

3) Never get on a taxi ( or any other transportation for that matter except when you know the prices are fixed by law ) without asking how much you’re paying for the ride. Or insist on using the meter.

4) Always have passport size photos in your wallet. You’ll never know when you need them.

5) Invest in a quality money belt which is attached to your waist or hanging on your neck.. Make sure it’s not visible and that it’s strong.

6) As much as possible, don’t wear expensive jewelry. Or if you really need to wear some, don’t flaunt it.

7) When a cab driver sets a price for the trip, always ask if the price is for a one way trip, round trip, per person, per taxi, etc.

8) Always have the address and phone number of the hotel you’re staying in. If you’re traveling with a tour guide, have his number as well.

9) When in public places, always have your luggage in view.

10) When departing a country that’s known for drug trafficking, be doubly careful with your bags and belongings. They’re not that difficult to tamper with. And if this very nice old man should ask you to hold the teddy bear as you go through customs, don’t! Harsh I know, but better than you ending up in jail.

11) Always remember the golden rule. If it sounds too good to be true, it must be.

12) When in your hotel or other public buildings, always check where emergency exits are.

13) If someone unexpectedly knocks on your hotel door, don’t just open the door. Look through the peep hole and see that you know who the person is. Never let a stranger in.

Choosing a Web Design Company for Your Business Website

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

Now there are many different criteria to consider when choosing a Web Design Company. One of which is, what kind of website is it you need?

Depending on whether you want to sell products, just advertise a bricks and mortar business or something radically different, will govern the skill set required of your chosen Web Design Company.

Most Web Design Companies will be able to design a simple site advertising a business but may not be very good at constructing sites that use an eCommerce Solution to sell products online. When looking at the portfolio of each Web Design Company, pay attention to the type of sites they are making. If they have never built a site with an eCommerce Solution, don’t pay them to learn how to!

The portfolio is a good place to start with all Web Design Companies. While looking at each site on their portfolio, make sure they are of a good quality and contain a link saying they were designed by the Web Design Company. It’s amazing how often I see Web Design Companies trying to pass other designer’s work of as their own. Also check all the way through the portfolio, a common tactic of Web Design Companies is to place their best work first and hiding their not so good work at the bottom of the pile. Looking all the way through will give you a better idea of their consistency.

Designing websites today isn’t quite as simple as it should be. People Surfing the web use a number of different web browsers e.g. Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Firefox etc. try looking at every site you view in these browsers to make sure they all display correctly.

Phone up a Web Design Company and have a good discussion to see if you get on. You don’t want to be working with someone you find hard to get along with.

Ask the Web Design Company if they have any referrals and speak to them as well, asking what their experience was like.

Check the legalities of the web design service, who will own the site after it is completed, who will own the copyright? All of these things will have further implications, especially if you want to start using another Web Design Company due to problems.

And of course we come to price. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for. Don’t go thinking choosing a Web Design Company is anything different. A good analogy is buying a car worth twice the amount your paying because it has a hole in the fuel tank. You might be saving money now but other time its going to cost you a lot more until you get it fixed!
